Capt. Sherrod Hunter of the Confederate army, sent from Tucson a detachment of 10 men under Sgt. Henry Holmes to scout for Union troops. Lt. James Barrett and 13 Union troops from the "California Column" rode into an ambush in which Lt. Barrett & 2 privates were killed, with 3 others wounded. The Confederate losses were 3 men captured including Sgt. Holmes.
